- The school house is to be greatly improved as soon as school closes. The
inside plastering will be replaced by a nicely arranged matched ceiling. It
is understood that next year's teacher will be a Mr. Loucks, although no
definite arrangements have been made. |

Richard Hill Remembers S.S. #13 The first school was built in 1871.** The
carpenter was Ferdinand Edgar. It was said to be the first building in the
area with a self-supporting roof. The rafters were trusses resting on the
walls so there were no posts in the room. There were two yards to the school
with a high board fence with barbed wire on the top separating them. However,
someone had knocked a couple of boards off to make it easy to go back and
forth. Inside there was a large blackboard made out of lumber that had
shrunk, so you had to hunt for smooth places to write on. At the back was a
map case with maps on rollers that could be pulled down for viewing. There were benches down both walls and part
way across the back. On one side was the water pail and dipper, a wash basin
and towel. The water had to be carried half a mile, so it was precious. Not
too much was wasted on washing. The old school had six windows and two doors.
We only used one door, the other was to let in the cold or evacuate the place
in a hurry. The room had a broom closet at one corner and a small library at
the other. There was a clock on the bookcase. When the walls of the school started to fail, rods
were put across the room both ways to support it. Fred Perry Sr., who was a
trustee was drilling a hole through the wall and came in behind the clock. He
said he was trying to stop time. The bell used in school was a hand bell. If
you were very good you might have the privilege of ringing it. Mostly one of
the girls got the job. The rods were the undoing of the old school. The boys
used to perform on them and a couple of them could shake the whole building
in the process. So, in 1926, with the end falling out, it was torn down and a
new one built. Hugh Milling was the contractor. This school was closed in
1965 and was converted into a dwelling. **Note: There was
definitely a school on this property long before 1871. |
